Independent curator
Curator / Director, Lincoln Art Programme, Lincoln

James E Smith

I am in independent curator living and working in the UK. My practice has been informed by circumstantial inspiration to initiate projects, working with others to produce works including live art / performance / intervention / happening.

Specific projects include ‘Art At Work’ (2007) which developed the relationship between artists and audience, considering internal unfinished studio work and the production of work for the public domain. 'The Crumb Programme' (2008) produced collaborations between selected studio artists with the outcome of creating work for display. These collaborations were met with varying degrees of self satisfaction and frustration.

As a curator I am interested in exploring alternative display locations, preferring to source locations that can have more of a direct / organic / conflicting relationship with the work. By creating a relationship between art work and site / location, the art work can resonate or sit unobserved in a way that can relate to individual pieces, rather than amassing works generically.

Alongside my independent practice I am also the co-director ‘Lincoln Art Programme’, a live art commissioning body which is based in Lincoln. The organisation aims to bring high quality art to the city and region to investigate new ways of working and exploring territory through new commissions and collaborations.
