Independent curator
Programme Co-ordinator, Situations, Bristol
The north & south cabin, Redcliffe, Bristol
I am an emerging curator based in Bristol and have worked for Situations since 2006, currently holding the position of Programme Co-ordinator. My practice incorporates independent projects alongside my work at Situations. I enjoy the freedom that my independent work offers whilst being able to work as part of an integrated team at Situations.
My practice is characterised through the sites and situations that I work in, which are outside the confines of galleries and often within the public sphere or alternative spaces. This deliberate act to work out in the public space allows for new processes when working with artists in an attempt to produce imaginative responses to the world around, reach broader audiences and create an unexpected encounter for people going about their daily lives.
Recent projects have included: The Black Cloud (2009) - a remarkable temporary structure design by Heather and Ivan Morison for Victoria Park, Bristol (Situations), Northcabin (2008-2010) - a series of temporary commissions for a disused bridge operating cabin, Bristol (independent) and Responses: three approaches to one space (2008) - a cumulative series of new commissions for Spike Island (independent).
I am currently working on a new artist publication with Sovay Berriman, A Handbook for A Civilisation, which will be a unique series of new works by a group of 10 artists looking at the term of ideology. At Situations we will be launching Wonders of Weston (www.wondersofweston.org) in September, which will comprise six significant permanent commissions across the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare.
